Best Chocolate Salted Caramel Apple Bark
One of the most appealing things about Fall is the treats that come along in October, especially if you have a sweet tooth. Now, I’m not one to celebrate Halloween, but I enjoy making sweets for my kiddos, letting them trick or treat for candy, and having fun dressing up at school. One of the most iconic treats of Fall is the caramel apple. That’s where the inspiration for the Best Chocolate Salted Caramel Apple Bark comes from.
It’s a take on the classic that is just a little bit easier to eat while maintaining all that great flavor! Rich chocolate almond bark is layered with crispy green apples, crunchy salted pretzels, and finally drizzled with buttery caramel for a sweet that will surely KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF! Your taste buds aren’t going to know what to do!
Sharing is caring!

As stated, caramel apples are the undisputed champions of the treat world for Fall. And I can see why! Bright, sour green apples are dipped in creamy, melted caramel for that sweet/tart combination that can’t be beaten! And people have taken the traditional caramel apple and started adding so many toppings that the varieties are endless.
The History behind the Caramel Apple
We know that sweet and sour go well together, but we also know that sweet and salty make a great food pairing. That’s where the pretzels come into play. They add the right amount of crunch and a salty bite that compliments everything else in the bark. (And I’ve seen plenty of caramel apples dipped in crushed pretzels… such a good idea from the food gurus!)

Another reason why I like this caramel apple bark is because of how easy it is to eat. I’m not going to lie; I struggle slightly with biting a caramel apple. (Especially out in public. HA) They tend to get slightly messy, and sooner or later, my caramel apple falls apart on me. (Or my teeth get stuck in the caramel, and I’m humiliated.) This little snack hack takes care of that problem. The bark is broken into pieces that can easily fit into my mouth, and I can hold them in my hand. It just makes the classic caramel apple a little more accessible to all the eaters in the world. It’s truly the perfect treat!

Another great thing about this bark is that you can customize it any way you like. Go for it if you want to add that salty bite with something other than pretzels. Whatever your heart desires will work just fine. (Except corn chips. I don’t think I would take it that far!) You can also use white chocolate instead of milk chocolate if you prefer. The possibilities are endless. You will still have the same taste of the caramel and apple and think of the other toppings as accessories to compliment those two primary flavors.

Tips for making the Best Chocolate Salted Caramel Apple Bark :
- If you want the caramel to harden like the chocolate, consider the hard-shell caramel syrup that goes on ice cream. The caramel bits I used stayed a little soft and sticky even after cooling the fridge.
- Another option is to use the best caramels – Werther’s Original and melt them on the stove.
- You can also make a homemade caramel sauce that will firm up for you. Just cook it until it reaches 245 degrees F. for chewy caramel with a tender bite or 310 degrees F. for hard caramel.
- How do you make homemade caramel? (Some great recipes use corn syrup and brown sugar.)
- For caramel sauce, you’ll need 1 cup of granulated sugar, ¼ cup of water, ½ cup of heavy cream, 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter, and a pinch of salt.
- Heat sugar and water over medium heat. Gently stir a couple of times until the mixture is evenly distributed on the bottom of the pan, then do not stir again.
- After a few minutes, the sugar will dissolve, and the syrup will bubble. Swirl the pan gently, but don’t stir — leave it alone as much as possible and let it darken into a medium to deep amber color.
- Once the syrup has darkened, stir the unsalted butter into the syrup mixture with a wooden spoon or heat-proof spatula. Let it cook for an additional minute without stirring.
- Stir continuously to incorporate the cream into the syrup, then add a pinch of salt and stir. Let it cook, without stirring, until it reaches the desired temperatures.
- The pretzels are salty, but if you want to add more, sprinkle a hint of sea salt on the chocolate base before you start layering the other ingredients.

Variations for the Best Chocolate Salted Caramel Apple Bark:
- Instead of using the almond bark, melt your favorite candy bars for the base of the bark. Hershey’s Chocolate, Twix, and even Snickers would be great. You have the chocolate, some caramel, and a peanut crunch.
- To make the bark less sweet, use semi-sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate bars for a little bitterness. (I’m a dark chocolate fan, and the dark chocolate sea salt caramels would be great in this!)
- You can also melt chocolate-covered caramels or some other chocolate caramel candy for your base and build the caramel into the bark. Of course, I would still drizzle caramel over the top for presentation and that signature chew.
Storage for the Best Chocolate Salted Caramel Apple Bark :
- The bark should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge to avoid the apples sweating.
