Better than Cracker Barrel Cornbread Recipe
This is not some vendetta against a beloved Southern food chain. No, this is just the truth. I want to show you how to make my Better than Cracker Barrel Cornbread Recipe so that you can solidify your Southern heritage and join the generations of cooks who have satisfied their family’s cravings for unbelievable bread! (HA)
But in all seriousness, if you are from the South, then one type of bread will always land on the table: homemade cornbread. I grew up with either old-fashioned cornbread or biscuits for dinner every night and, on some occasions, BOTH! I could argue that it’s one of the best breads, and I’m super proud that it’s a symbol of the South. (Because we know our way around the kitchen!)
Sharing is caring!

So, let’s have a little chat about Cracker Barrel’s cornbread “corn muffins.” (If you want this to truly be a copycat recipe, grab a muffin tin, some paper liners, and an ice cream scoop to make this cornbread recipe into muffins.) Honestly, I have no beef with Cracker Barrel Restaurants. I have stated previously that on our family vacations, we make a point to eat breakfast at Cracker Barrel on our way home every time. It’s true. We love their breakfast. It’s good eating.
My husband has always been a huge fan of their meatloaf. (This inspired me to devise a recipe to satisfy him at home. And I did: “Better than Cracker Barrel Meatloaf.” So, it’s not that I don’t like their food or the reasons why they exist. I get it. Southern food is the best food, and people want to enjoy it.
Let’s take a look at why Cracker Barrel is so beloved!

But I want people to know that Southern food is easy to make. The flavors are rich, the textures are varied, and the history is extensive, but the recipes are attainable for the first time at home cook, no matter your experience level. And learning how to make the basics is where you should start and then build upon that. Cornbread is a delicious side dish, but it’s also super easy to make, uses simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry, and is a staple in Southern cuisine. It’s a perfect addition to slow-cooked beans, spaghetti, chicken dumplings, and more!

Another great thing about cornbread is that you can jazz it up any way you like and even change the shape. Cracker Barrel makes delicious cornbread muffins as their “corn” bread, which is a nice change from the norm. They are easy to serve to a crowd, require no cutting or portioning after being baked, and can be eaten with your hands. That means that they would make great appetizers for a party!
Cornbread is a great canvas for different flavors, and one of my favorite recipes is a Cajun Cornbread recipe that leaves the category of “side dish” and becomes the STAR of dinner. It’s layered with ground beef, corn, cheddar cheese, and diced jalapenos and is a flavor explosion for your taste buds!

Tips for Better than Cracker Barrel Cornbread Recipe:
- Don’t skip adding oil to your cast iron skillet and letting it get hot in the oven. This makes a nice crispy crust on the exterior of your cornbread.
- Also, feel free to substitute the avocado oil in the recipe for other types of oil or even melted butter, but don’t leave it out. This addition will give you cornbread with moist crumbs.
- Crack your egg in a separate bowl to ensure you don’t get any shells in your recipe.
- If you use self-rising flour, leave out the baking powder in this recipe.
