I don’t drink alcohol but that doesn’t mean that I don’t like the flavor of some of the cocktails that are so prominent at beach-side resorts! here’s a little Spanish lesson for ya!

Piña – is the Spanish word for “pineapple” and Colada – is the Spanish word for “strained”.

The special character above the “n” in the word Piña introduces an invisible “y” sound between the “n” and the “a”. So, the word is actually pronounced like this → Peen yah

This special character, which looks like a tiny worm crawling above the letter, is called a “tilde”.

The Spanish “n” is the only letter in the alphabet that can have this unique character above it. Look below at some other Spanish words that also have this character and when you say them out loud, be sure to add that “y” sound.

  • Piñata – A container that is decorated, filled with candy, and then broken as part of a celebration. It is commonly associated with Mexico and is hung from above during Christmas or birthday festivities. (Pronounced → Peen yah tah)
  • Niña – This is the Spanish word for little girl. (Pronounced → Neen yah)
  • Mañana – This is the Spanish word for tomorrow and morning. (Pronounced → Mahn yah nah)
