Hola y’all!

My family and I are embarking on a new journey into sourdough bread. My grandmother made sourdough breads when I was a kid but I haven’t really heard much about it since. I happened upon another blogger that LOVES sourdough and does a ton of stuff with it and she really got me to thinking about my childhood and the delicious breads that my grandmother would make. I didn’t realize just how simple and delicious sourdough loaf bread is until I made this recipe.

why start making your own simple and delicious sourdough loaf bread?

Well, I think the Pandemic of 2020 taught us all a valuable lesson. We need to know how to make basic things and not have to rely on the pre-packaged items as much. I was baking bread for my family while we were stuck in solitude that year but that bread required pre-packaged yeast. It was AMAZINGLY good but I wanted to try my hand at making bread without any “help” from the store… I just wish that I would have thought about this recipe… or sourdough bread at all! The bread of my childhood had not came back to met yet.

When life returned to semi-normal, we began buying bread off the shelves again. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are some breads that aren’t that bad in the grocery store. But they also have a nice price tag. I have a family of 5 and I’m pretty frugal, so making my own bread is MUCH cheaper. Not to mention…freshly baked bread right out of the oven is simply divine!

Anyways…

when we went back to buying bread off the shelf, I began to notice just how “un fresh” it really was.

It wasn’t the flavor that gave it away but rather the texture of the bread. It’s hard to explain but you know if bread is fresh or not. I’m not even talking about when bread is stale… I just mean the way that it tears or falls apart on you. It just wasn’t good. I found myself throwing away loaves of bread because nobody, including myself, wanted to eat it.

One night while scrolling online, I happened upon the blogger Farmhouse on Boone. I started watching her videos because they were so calming and soon realized that she used sourdough starter for just about EVERYTHING! This really intrigued me because it reminded me of my grandmother’s breads. As I continued to watch her make common recipes with sourdough bread, the thought occurred to me, “Why don’t I try my hand at making my own sourdough starter and bread?”

The next week Ava and I started to work on our sourdough starter and soon after that, we made these two beautiful loaves of sourdough bread. Now, I can have fresh made bread for my family every single week for a fraction of the cost and with a much better flavor and texture!

how is sourdough good for your stomach?

Another reason that this sourdough bread appealed to me is because my family has a history of problems digesting gluten.

As soon as I heard that the long fermenting process of sourdough makes the breads more easily digestible, I was all in. Not only was this type of bread-making budget friendly and delicious, but it had health benefits too!
