The BEST Homemade Chex Mix Recipe

I don’t know about you, but I have come to really love homemade snack mixes. Mostly because I have the power to add whatever ingredients I want and adjust my seasonings accordingly. For these reasons and so much more, I am so excited to bring you The BEST Homemade Chex Mix Recipe and introduce you to a deliciously, salty snack that is way better than anything you can get in a store.

Sharing is caring!

Let me tell you a few things that make my homemade snack mix better than what you buy at the grocery store. First of all, I make sure that some ingredients have some sort of flavor or seasoning on their own. For example, the Cheez-It’s are spicy, the crackers are coated in white cheddar, and the pretzels are seasoned with parmesan cheese. (I refuse to use plain pretzel sticks.)

Another thing that elevates my recipe over that pre-packaged stuff is the seasoning blend. It’s just the right amount of salty and spicy. I mean, what’s not to like about garlic, onion, hot sauce, Worcestershire, and Greek seasoning? And if you don’t think you will like Cavender’s seasoning, then swap that for any seasoned salt that you like. The Lawry’s brand is good, and I love Tony’s Cajun Seasoning as well.

Be Sure To Pin It For Later!

It’s kind of becoming a family tradition to make a big batch of homemade Chex Mix for my dad on Christmas. And I always make sure to send his favorite crunchy snack home with him in a Ziploc bag. (The good thing about this holiday classic is that my husband and kiddos love it too! And my original recipe makes enough for both of us to have plenty of this favorite snack.)

This is also a great snack to have around on game day or even for the New Year when you are up celebrating late and drinking delicious punch! (My Sparkling Raspberry Punch Recipe goes so well with this savory snack)

And the final reason I think you should make your own homemade blend of the Original Chex Party Mix is because it’s more affordable. (And in this economy, every dime counts!) Your most expensive ingredients are going to be the nuts, but for the amount of snack mix that this makes, you will be blown away at how far your dollars will go.

And we all know that the snack aisle at the grocery store is probably one of the priciest places to shop. (Bags of chips are now nearing $10.00 each and popcorn is even outrageous!) So having a homemade snack with great flavor that can feed a crowd and not break the bank, is imperative.

Tips for The BEST Homemade Chex Mix Recipe:

  • Use parchment paper on the baking sheets for easy cleanup and to keep the snack mix from sticking.
  • I forgot to add bagel chips, but feel free to put them in this easy recipe. They are delicious!
  • Be adventurous with your homemade seasonings. Honestly, there are probably several things in your spice cabinet that would be delicious like parsley flakes, chili powder, thyme, etc.
  • I only have one large baking sheet, so I had to divide my snack mix between two and truthfully should have used a third sheet pan.

The BEST Homemade Chex Mix Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white cheddar Cheese crackers
  • 1 cup spicy Cheez-Its
  • 9 cups Corn Chex cereal (You can substitute wheat Chex, rice Chex, or any other kinds of Chex that you like.)
  • 1 cup pecan halves
  • 1 cup peanuts
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup raw whole almonds
  • 1 cup parmesan pretzel chips
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce
  • 1 stick of salted butter (melted)
  • 1.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1.5 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cavender’s seasoning

The BEST Homemade Chex Mix Recipe Instructions:

  • First, preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  • Second, add the cereal, crackers, nuts, and pretzels to a large bowl and toss to combine.
  • Third, in a separate bowl, combine the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and Cavender’s seasoning and whisk.
  • Next, pour the melted butter mixture on top of the cereal mixture and mix really well. (I like to use gloves and do this with my hands. That way I can make sure that every piece is covered in the butter and seasonings.)
  • Then, pour the Chex Mix onto the prepared baking sheet. (I used 2 large baking sheets, but you might want to use 3 to get the mix in a single layer.)
  • Bake the Chex mix for 2 hours, tossing and stirring it every 20 minutes.
  • Finally, remove the Chex mix from the oven, let it cool, place in an airtight container and enjoy!

Storage for The BEST Homemade Chex Mix Recipe:

  • Store Chex Mix in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month.
