Sweet Hawaiian Rolls Recipe – No Bread Machine Needed
Fluffy, delicious, heavenly… all valid descriptions of my Sweet Hawaiian Rolls Recipe – No Bread Machine Needed. They are the perfect balance of salty and sweet and pair perfectly with just about any dish you can think of!
Don’t be intimidated by homemade bread. Let me show you how easy they are to make and pretty soon you won’t be driving to the grocery store to get that “less than fresh” packaged stuff. You will be whipping up baked goods like nobody’s business!
Sharing is caring!
Let’s talk about this bread machine situation… or the lack thereof. I don’t have a bread machine, and honestly, as of now, I don’t foresee ever getting one. (I know that as soon as I make a statement like that… it will inevitably happen… HA) But my Mamaw did have a bread machine and used it quite often. Instead, I just use my stand mixer and my hands.
There’s something about making bread that is therapeutic and I want to touch it. HA HA. I don’t know if that sounds weird, but it’s true. In my mind, the whole point of making anything from scratch is that you get your hands dirty and experience it completely. And I don’t think that happened with a bread machine.
Plus, I’m afraid that a lot of people think that you MUST have a bread machine make bread, or at least be successful at it… and that’s just not true. This recipe is proof of that very thing and I promise you that there is no sacrifice on flavor or texture.
Another thing that I like about this recipe is that the rising of the bread doesn’t take a long time. One hour of rise time is nothing! (Especially compared to sourdough which can take 4-12 hours before you are ready to bake any bread)
Another recipe that I like to use these sweet Hawaiian rolls for is my Hot Ham and Provolone Sliders. I simply skip the step at the end where I brush the rolls with honey, butter, and salt. Instead, I follow the recipe of the sliders and use the Italian dressing mix with butter. (I would use these rolls the next day for the slider recipe)
These sliders are a big hit in my family and are the perfect meal paired with chips and dips for an “easy” night off. For us, this is usually Wednesday nights because we have church. And although you can use the store-bought King’s Hawaiian Rolls, there is simply no comparison to these homemade ones.
(Don’t take my word for it… try it yourself)
It’s not an overly sweet bread. I don’t want you to be thrown off by the honey, sugar, and pineapple juice. The addition of the honey butter at the end certainly makes the rolls lean more towards that but if you leave that off then they are just the most delicious, fluffy rolls possible.
This recipe comes from inspiration of King’s Hawaiian Rolls. Have you ever had them before?

- 1 teaspoon salt + a dash for sprinkling on top of rolls at the end
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened) + 2 tablespoons melted butter to brush on top of baked rolls
Sweet Hawaiian Rolls Recipe – No Bread Machine Needed Instructions:
- First, pour the milk and pineapple juice into a mixing bowl and heat until it reaches 100-110 degrees Fahrenheit. I use a digital thermometer to make sure that the temperature is perfect.
- Second, add the active yeast, and 1 tablespoon of honey to the milk and pineapple juice. Stir well and set aside.
- Third, put the flour into the bowl of a stand mixer and add salt, sugar, 4 tablespoons of butter, and 2 eggs.
- Next, add the yeast, milk, and pineapple juice mixture to the dry ingredients in the stand mixer.
- Then, knead the dough on medium speed for 8-10 minutes in the stand mixer with a dough hook.
- After the dough has been kneaded, remove it from the stand mixer bowl and put it onto a lightly floured surface.
- Roll the dough by hand, folding it until it forms a smooth ball. You want the dough to bounce back when you poke it.
- Place it back into the bowl, cover it with plastic wrap or a clean dish towel, place it in a warm place, and let the dough rise for about an hour.
- After the dough has doubled in size, cut it into 8 equal pieces.
- Take each portion of dough and roll it into 8 equal-sized round balls. (Be sure to use flour if the dough begins to stick)
- Butter up a glass baking dish, place the rolls inside, and cover with plastic wrap or a clean dish towel while the oven preheats.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Before placing the rolls into the oven, brush the tops with egg wash.
- Bake the rolls at 350 degrees for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown on top. (Your bread is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 190 degrees.
- Once the rolls are finished baking, take them out of the oven brush them with the remaining melted honey butter, and sprinkle with a little salt.
